In her Guardian Life of November 27, 2016 interview, Toke Makinwa says “it’s important to tell your story or else the world will tell it for you”.
That is the obvious reason-to-be for On Becoming, her bestselling rave of the moment. And true to type and hype she has delivered. The book is the talk of town!
Like the response to Tiwa Savage’s expose on her failed marriage, so far there seems to be more sympathisers than neutrals on this one. But while Tiwa chose a more transient medium to wash her dirty linen in the public, Toke has cast her story on a more enduring canvass. And by this singular act she has brought a money-making dimension to her tale-telling.
At the moment, Toke’s On Becoming, the acclaimed pain-to-glory memoir is already a best seller on Amazon, the world’s leading online store, a fact publicised with much excitement by the Author on her twitter handle. Can you beat that! The important math is this: to become a best seller on Amazon you need to average between 500-1,000 copies sales in the space of about a week. Multiply that by On Becoming’s quoted price of $8.99 and you’ll agree someone is in for the big money. All of this in a week. Not to mention the sold-out report from the live book Launch in Lagos, Nigeria.
Credit must go to Toke for her brilliance in telling a well calculated story. But while our jury is still out on the villain ex-hubby Maje’s version, one can only ask pertinent questions.
Questions like: What is Toke’s end game? Revenge? Women empowerment? Money? Or a combination of all the above.Or did she just borrow a leaf from western climes where divorcing wives in celebrity marriages get book contracts as payday for their “pain”?. Tiger Woods’ ex-wife got paid a whopping record $750 million to block any similar contract to say anything about her divorce.
Would you seek a payday for your pains? Celeb Police wonders. Whatever your take on the matter is, Toke Makinwa is sure going to make a hell lot of money from this breakup tell-all!
