The chairman, Copyright Society of Nigeria (COSON), Chief Tony Okoroji, voiced out that his organisation would no longer accept a situation where some people would continue to feast on the sweat of musicians in the country in order to fill their pockets.
He made this known at the just concluded ‘No Music Day’ celebrated on Saturday, September 1, 2012. The theme of this year’s event was ‘State of the Nigerian Music Industry’.
He said, “We are relentless in our resolve to bring to an end the era of ‘monkey dey work, baboon dey chop’, which had characterized the abuse of the rights of musicians and the music industry in Nigeria.”
Commenting on the multi-billion naira law suits recently instituted by COSON against Transcorp Hilton Abuja and several major broadcasting stations, Okoroji said, “we apologize to no one for using the law to defend the interest of our industry.
“We have been pushed to the wall and we are fighting back and our fight back will be as robust as has ever been seen in Nigeria. It is out of respect that for months we engaged the hotel and broadcast industry groups in discussions but they treated us with utmost disrespect.
“Now, the battle line is drawn and everyone is on its own. We will no longer negotiate with those who negotiate in bad faith. I promise you that that at the end, everyone will find out that Nigerian musicians and the music industry neither lack the intellect, connections, resources nor will to protect the rights of our stakeholders. The era of ‘monkey dey work, baboon dey chop’ is over.”
On September 1, 2009, music industry stakeholders ordered the broadcast media in Nigeria not to play their songs on air. Since then, the day has been set aside to celebrate ‘No Music Day’. This year, between 8am to 10am, broadcast media were told not to play any music as a sign of celebrating the day with the musicians.
