The police have arrested some suspects connected to the alleged cases of rape at the Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) camps, with the Inspector General of Police threatening to dismiss and prosecute policemen involved in the act.
IGP Ibrahim Idris, while making this revelation in Abuja yesterday, listed those arrested to include two police officers, one prison warden, two civilian JTF, a civilian from the Ministry of Agriculture, Maiduguri, three from the Army and one from the Airforce.
The IGP noted that this arrest followed the allegation few weeks ago by Human Rights Watch, which led to the setting up of a panel to investigate all alleged cases of abuses and other forms of misconduct carried out by policemen, soldiers, camp officials, vigilantes and others at the various IDPs’ camps.
Recall that a report by the Human Rights Watch indicated cases of alleged sexual abuse, exploitation, harassment, gender based violence and professional misconduct against IDPs in some of the North-eastern states. According to the report, there are 43 cases of alleged abuses and misconduct.
