The Radio, Television, Theatre and Arts Workers, RATTAWU, and the Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ, have appealed to the Federal Government to put on hold the planned privatization of its media organizations. This is to allow full negotiation with all the stakeholders.
In a statement jointly signed by the RATTTAWU Secretary General, Henry Odugala and his NUJ counterpart, Shuaibu Leman, the Unions said adequate consultations should be made to carry the staff of the media along in the process.
The Unions according to the statement, are not against the move which they stressed would improve productivity in the governing owned media.
According to the organisations, the planned commercialisation of government media houses was revealed to them by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC).
The statement said the unions were mindful of the need to commercialise certain government-owned media organisations to ensure optimal productivity.
It, however, noted that it would be reckless to commercialise the media organisations without first engaging stakeholders to a brainstorming session and chart an acceptable way forward.
