Police operatives have reportedly arrested a controversial Prophet in Anambra state, Onyebuchi Okocha, popularly known as ‘Onyeze Jesus’.
According to TheNation, the founder of Children of Light Anointing Ministries in Nkpor, Idemili North local government area of the state, was arrested on Wednesday, January 27, 2021.
Reports say Onyeze Jesus was in police custody, as at press time, and would likely be arraigned for various offences on Thursday, January 28, 2021.
Police spokesperson, Haruna Mohammed confirmed the arrest to newsmen but declined to give further details surrounding the Prophet’s arrest.
His arrest comes days after Anambra State Government through a statement by the Commissioner for Information and Public Enlightenement, Mr C. Don Adinuba condemned the ‘criminal and indecent‘ conduct of the prophet after a viral video showed him and his followers in a river, where they bathed naked while he sprayed them with N50 notes.
Adinuba said Onyeze Jesus promotes superstitions and strife by telling his gullible followers that their misfortunes are caused by family members, relatives and business associates.
The Commissioner also condemned the destruction of naira notes by the pastor, an action which contravenes the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN Act of 2007.
Also, Ministry of Health, in a statement on Wednesday, January, 27, warned hospitals and mortuaries operating in the state against allowing ‘Onyeze Jesus’ access to their facilities to carry out the ‘miracle’ of raising seven corpses on January 28, 2021.
Residents of the state had expressed worry over some of the videos trending on social media attributed to the Prophet, including parading naked people in a river, abuse of currency, animal cruelty and his get-rich-quick promises to gullible members of the public.
Following condemnation and backlash over the viral video, the prophet apologised to Nigerians and the Anambra State for abusing Naira notes and sharing nude videos of people online.
