Nigeriafilms.com has learnt that the twin brother award-winning, celebrated and highly-gifted Nigerian filmmaker, Obi Emelonye, Uchenna, has been named the United Nations High Commissioner in Uganda.

His appointment came on May 1, 2015 and he will be the world body’s representative for human rights in the East African country.

Uchenna has about 20 years of experience as a human rights attorney. We gathered that while growing up, he was fascinated by the human rights abuse during the Biafran War in Nigeria, which spurred his interest in fighting for the society, especially the vulnerable.

He later studied Law at the Abia State University for his first and second degrees and then obtained a doctorate in Laws from the University of Helsinki. He also attended the famous Central European University in Budapest, Hungary.

The Law expert was formerly the Head of Governance, Institutional and Justice Reform Division of the International Development Law Organization, IDLO-Rome. He helped in the drafting processes of the bill of rights and rule of law chapters of the constitutions of Kenya, South Sudan and Somalia.

Uchenna has worked in Nigeria, Darfur, Kosovo, Belgium and New York.
