Former President Goodluck Jonathan was hailed by Nigerians and the world for calling President Muhammadu Buhari, shortly before the March 28, 2015 presidential election result was announced by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
Many saw Jonathan’s act as heroic because he accepted defeat by an opposition, which many African leaders do not do.
But a Senator-elect, Shehu Sani, has said that there was nothing special in what the former President did.
“In India, Europe and the Americas, when a President or a Prime Minister loses an election, he simply hands over to the winner and no one ‘commends or praises’ him for doing so.
“In Africa, we call those who lose and hand over ‘heroes’ and we shower praises on them for doing what they are supposed to do. Why don’t we call people who obey traffic lights ‘heroes’?” he wrote on his Facebook page.
