An abandoned girl was rescued on Tuesday by the Officials of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, NSCDC, Abia State Command.
The baby who was abandoned with a written letter from the unknown mother was rescued by the Anti-Traffic Unit of the agency near a health centre in Avodim village in Umuahia South LGA.
While speaking with Channels Television, the state commandant of the NSCDC, Walter Chika said the letter noted that the baby should not be sold but be kept in a motherless home or given to a good Nigerian who would take care of her.
“The abandoned child was rescued by the Anti-Traffic Unit of the agency near a health centre in Avodim village in Umuahia South LGA.
“The mother, in a letter said she should not be sold but handed over to motherless babies’ home or any well-meaning Nigerian who can cater for her welfare,” Chika added.
Condemning the act, the commandant said, “Abandoning children under the disguise of inability to care for them is a criminal act and against the right of the Nigerian child.
“Discussion is ongoing with designated ministry to take responsibility for the child.”
