The Governor of Lagos State, Mr. Babatunde Fashola (SAN), last Thursday, met with representatives of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Zone D, as well as students of the state’s university (LASU) to shed more light on government’s developmental programme for the school.
Addressing the students and members of the school management, including the Vice-Chancellor of LASU, Professor John Obafunwa, the Governor said in order to arrive at a decision that would be beneficial to all stakeholders in the sector, emotions and sentiment should be avoided while logic and reason should prevail.
Speaking after patiently listening to the representatives of NANS and LASU, the Governor, who also had with him the state Commissioner for Education, Mrs. Olayinka Oladunjoye, urged the students always look before the leap.
“One of the things I am going to urge is that when you are pursuing causes like this, first you must get the facts right, if you are not sure, don’t state your opinions as fact. It diminishes the worth of the leader when he says something in public and when it is checked it is not true. The essence of leadership is also trust. If you don’t know, you don’t know. Nobody is an expert; even computers get their memory full sometimes,” Mr. Fashola advised.
The Governor also noted that he had all his education in Nigeria and never outside the country. “If LASU does not succeed, I have a problem because LASU must be the first place to look when we are employing people. It is our own school. So I want to see in the next 15 to 20 years another product of LASU becoming the Vice Chancellor, becoming the Governor of Lagos State. That is the way it should be,” he said.
The meeting, which took place at the Banquet Hall of the Lagos House, Alausa, was a follow up to the first meeting he had last Tuesday with the students who came to appeal for reconsideration of the decision on the fees increase which took effect two years ago and other problems affecting higher institutions in the country, including the protracted strike by Polytechnics lecturers.
Governor Fashola commended the leadership of the NANS headed by Mr. Sunday Ashefun and the Students’ Union of LASU led by Comrade Ibrahim Fatoyinbo, for showing “commendable leadership”. He also commended Fatoyinbo, “for his courageous defense of the interest of his colleagues” advising, however, that students should be sure of their facts before pursuing any cause.
