Elegant Stallion, Onyeka Onwenu said although she has had a very good relationship with the Juju Icon, King Sunny Ade, she never had an affair with him as rumored by Nigerians.
Onwenu’s duets with KSA ‘Wait for me’ and ‘Choices’ were major hits of the nineties, riding on heavily rotated videos that soon began to fuel gossip that the two were dating. The video ‘Wait for me’, is a song preaching abstinence, showing KSA and a much younger Onwenu acting as lovers.
‘Sunny enjoyed the rumours, I did not. At a point I had to call him’, she said, while fielding questions from Tee A, during a recording season of Tymeout with Tee A.
‘But I am happy the project made a huge impact. We do not have to base everything we do on sleeping around. The beauty of a woman is being able to hold herself together, until the right time.’ she said.
Commenting on the quality of today’s lyrics, Onwenu condemned ‘dirty’ lyrics, advising young musicians to write inspiring songs.
‘You can sing love songs without being dirty. Iyogogo was a love song. We do not have to write dirty lyrics. We should use music to talk about issues. I sang about saying ‘no’ to sex ‘if you love me you go wait for me’.
