One Chidozie who belong s to a five-man robbery gang was set ablaze by irate mob on Tuesday for allegedly stealing mobile phones at Iyang Edem by Mount Zion in Calabar, Cross River state capital.
The secondary school dropout, Chidozie and his gang was said to have attacked a female teacher in Atu Secondary School and took her phones and other valuables.
Chidozie was apprehended because he was unable to run as fast as other gang members who escaped.
A source revealed that the residents of the area have been trailing the group. They decided to take the law into their hands because of the spate of criminal activities in the area adding that it will serve as a deterrent to others.
It was gathered that Chidozie who just got out of prison last week was a formal student of the school but was eventually expelled in his SS 2 because of his nefarious activities.
According to an eye witness who spoke under anonymity said, “He was unfortunate, because the others escaped.
“Due to the spate of armed robberies in our area, they did not spare him because he refused to accept that the phone was with him.They beat him to death and then set him ablaze.
“We learnt that Chidozie was just released from prison last week and he was also rusticated from Atu Secondary School when he was in Senior Secondary, SS 2 due to the nefarious activities he was involved in,” the witness added, noting that they were happy that he was killed on the spot.”
As at time of filing the report, the Police Public Relations Officers, PPRO, Irene Ugbo, could not be reached for comments.
