Munachi Abii, who won the Most Beautiful Girl in Nigeria (2007), in an interview with Hip TV, said, “Being a beauty queen was very interesting. Unfortunately, I felt like I was thrust into the deep end (too) quick (ly). It is not just about me. I feel it’s a beauty pageant industry thing.
“Beauty pageants never really prepare one for what lies ahead. They just tell one to put oneself together and that’s about it. They tell one that whatever one does, one should make sure one does not disrespect the brand, at least in the first year. There is a whole lot more to it which I had to learn along the way.”
Speaking on why she became a rapper, she said, “From there, I became a rapper. I always wrote music. I had friends in the music industry, so they brought me along. Typically, beauty queens are expected to be singers but I did not want to be like everybody else. I wanted to stand out and rapping was something that stood out. Till date, I have not come across any beauty queen that raps.”
Munachi Gail Teresa Abii Nwankwo (popularly known as Munachi Abii) was born on November 5th, 1987 in Port Harcourt, Rivers state, Nigeria to parents from Owerri, Imo state. She is a Nigerian rapper / hip-hop artist, songwriter, pageant winner, television presenter and model.
Muna obtained her O’Level qualifications from Federal Government Girls College Abuloma, Port Harcourt. She studied International Relations and Diplomacy at Benson Idahosa University, Benin City, Edo State. While growing up, she was encouraged by her parents to pursue her interests in music.
Muna won the Most Beautiful Girl in Nigeria pageant in 2008. Prior to winning the MBGN pageant, she was part of a Port Harcourt based rap group, The Specimen A, and collaborated with Terry Da Rapman on the track ‘My PH Girl’. During her reign as queen, she used her platform to create awareness for polio and sickle cell.
As a songwriter, she has written songs for artistes including J Martins and Waje, and has also appeared in several music videos, most notably in P-Square’s Ifunanya, which stirred up the rumour that she was in a relationship Peter Okoye. In June 2010, after years of collaborating with various artistes, Muna signed a multi-year management contract with Ayo Shonaiaya’s RMG Company, and began working on her debut album The Goddess, The Hustler, which will include the singles, I Feel Real, and Killer Queen. In 2011, Muna signed an endorsement deal with Unilever as the face of Lux. She also co-presented the television series Malta Guinness Street Dance Africa that same year. She took part in the BET Awards female Nigerian cypher in 2011.
Like a combatant soldier, Muna has had her share of bullets in the war zone music industry, as she, in April 2012, was involved in a war of words controversy with veteran rapper Mode 9, when, as the host of the Nokia-sponsored rap competition, Don’t Break The Beat, she disagreed with Mode 9’s comments. This sparked off a major argument that resulted in her snapping at the rapper to ‘Pass the mic’, a phrase that has since become associated with both artistes. The incident became a national topic of discussion when the video of the exchange went viral on YouTube, whilst fans of many took to Twitter, blogs and other social media sites to berate the ex-beauty queen.
Though many had expected there was going to be a public beef and diss tracks from both act, but like a mature and peace loving beauty queen she is, Muna, on a flight to Dubai, called Mode 9 on the phone, and also tweeted an apology to him publicly online. On May 31st, 2012, at the popular Lagos midweek concert ‘Industry Nite’ (which celebrated Muna’s two new rap singles), Muna called up Mode 9, they both hugged and performed a freestyle version of Notorious B.I.G’s Juicy. In 2015, she featured in Imoh Umoren’s TV series Indigo.
In August 2017, Munachi’s then 23 year old boyfriend, Tomi Thomas was reportedly cheating on the former beauty queen who is currently resident in Lagos. Tomi, the boyfriend stays in Dubai where he frequently sleeps with other girls behind Munachi’s back. She was said to be completely heartbroken and sad about Tomi’s slack on learning about his unfaithfulness. Prior to this relationship, she dated one of the famous P-square brothers, Peter Okoye.
