It is no longer news that Maje Ayida is suing Toke Makinwa for defamation for her representation of him in her bestselling work, On Becoming. The book which came months after their divorce mid last year, contains a lot of unsavoury descriptions of Maje, who was cast as the villain in Toke’s marriage and life’s journey so far.
But the recent move by Maje to counter her for the first time by ‘lawyering’ up, has thrown up a new dimension to the sordid affair that caused a major buzz in celebrity marriage circles last year. And Celeb Police forensics can tell you someone is about to get paid! It called the Offside Rule. And here’s why.
First, a recap of some of the most damning points raised by Toke in her story. According to her:
My Husband Would Not Come Inside Me
He Gave Me An STI
He Borrowed Cash From Me
His Mom Was Not Even Into Me
He Did Not Respect My Family
He Denied Me My Dream Wedding
He Kept Dating Anita After Our Wedding
He Told Me ‘The Other Girl’ Anita Was 9 Months Pregnant
The effect of these revelations have been pervasive, with the inevitable condemnation that followed : Maje was the scum of all scums. In the wake of the breakup, divorce and book revelations, Maje himself said business no longer boomed and people became very judgmental and vicious towards him after hearing the one-sided story. But three months later, he is about to shake the dirt off, and get paid too, with an unheeded legal warning letter giving way to a lawsuit that promises edge-of-the-seat drama considering the lead character involved, Toke Makinwa.
Offside Rule
While many may wonder as to why it took Maje so long to vent his displeasure about what Toke wrote about him, our expert team believes it was all a calculated move, either directly by him or his legal team. This is where the offside rule in football comes in. The rule simply states that a footballer is only considered to be in offside position when the ball has been released directly by his team mate to him. In other words, a player cannot be said to be offside until the ball has been passed directly to him. This is the card Maje has played on Toke. Suing at the early stages wouldn’t have had any potential for damages for him. He had to wait for the real damage to be done as well as for Toke Makinwa to make real profit before striking. Bang!
Toke Didn’t See This Coming
May be Toke expected a fightback from Maje at the initial time of release of the book in November last year. Maybe. But after three months, she must have believed she knocked him off. So when the warning letter came with its request for retraction and destruction of the book, both sold and unsold, as well as a public apology, defiance seemed a more appropriate reaction from the extremely confident and self-made vlogger. But by so doing and going the extra step to relaunch the sales drive for the book, Toke has taken Maje and his legal team’s bait – hook, line and sinker. Being very vocal and generally considered a strong lady, she may be spoiling for her day in court, which she will definitely have, but if she cannot substantiate the demeaning accusations with which she has murdered Maje’s public image, then Maje might just be in for a big pay day. Last we checked, the book had raked in how many millions?
Sit Tight For The Showdown
This one is not happening in Little Tokyo. Lagos is the place. Court details shortly. Barring any behind the door settlement, this case promises to be epic. More than what Toke has written in her book or what Maje has countered her with via his lawyers, we are about to relive the sordid details of that marriage fiasco live! On Becoming which has been dubbed a ‘tell-all’ might just end up becoming a ‘tell-some’ as we’ll be treated to all kinds of witnesses and all those drama you’ve only seen in movies.
