The rate at which some dubious people use details of celebrities to dupe their unsuspecting fans is becoming very alarming lately. There have been calls by various people for the government to take a strict action against these imposters, who dupe people on social media.
Recently, a fan of top Ghanaian actor, John Dumelo, was reportedly defrauded by an imposter, who tricked him into sending money for footing the medical bill of the actor’s purported sick mother.
John posted a picture on Instagram, which clearly showed the conversation he had with one of his fans, who claimed to have been chatting with one ‘John Dumelo’ on Facebook and Whatsapp.
According to him, “I go through this every day. People message me and claim someone in the name of John Dumelo is asking for money on Facebook and whatsapp. And they asking if it’s me? Please be advised not to send any money to anyone claiming to be ‘John Dumelo’ on Facebook, Viber, Skype or Whatsapp!
“My Facebook fan page is verified, yet people still chat with the non-verified ones. Instagram has fake accounts set up in the name of ‘John Dumelo.’ They cut and paste pix that i upload and use that to deceive people. They will tell you all sorts of lies that my mum is sick, i am stranded in Nigeria, my house got burnt in Ghana etc! Don’t send money to anyone!”
