Reality shows are actually meant to bring out the best and the in-built talent in a person who aspire to achieve a particular breakthrough in a given field. But how can we attribute the originality of these shows in Nigeria. Can it be seen as a way of extortion or what?
Extortion in the sense that when you pick up your phone to vote for a particular contestant, you are not sure of how many people have voted for him/her and you will be tempted to recharge more just to keep voting. Then, how sure are you that your votes count when at the end of the show you hear some funny announcement which makes you want to ask several questions.
These question is leading us to the just concluded popular reality TV show in Nigeria, ‘MTN Project Fame 7.0’ which came to an end on the 28th of September, 2014.
The event saw several contestants fighting for the winning prize which was N5million as cash prize, a recording deal and a fully loaded brand new car and other prizes for the first, second and third runner up respectively.
After several weeks of hard work in the MTN academy and several eviction which even saw two of the last eight contestants being evicted on the grand finale which has never happened before, then fans begin to raise eyebrow on what is the fate of reality shows in Nigeria including the company that collects the names of the contestant’s votes.
The show started on very bright note with high expectation with all the eight contestants performing their best songs and their original songs. After their performance, two contestants were evicted (wow) on a grand finale? It was left six contestants, Rukky, Clement, Christian, Ugo, Emeka, Geoffrey Oji.
When it was time to call out the winners, it was indeed an atmosphere full of tension and lots of high hopes from both friends and families of each contestants and even the judges and faculty of the academy. But was it news to Alexandre Forbes Company who are the ones in charge of the voting accumulation?
Then, it was the moment of truth and the unexpected happened. In 4th place is Clement who was given the sum of N2m, Ruky was first runner-up, winning a cash prize of N2m and a car while Christian was second runner up winning N2m and a car. After these three have been rewarded, it was left Ugo, Emeka and Geoffrey and the sit were getting hotter and when the results of the winner was announced, it did not go down well with some of the fans who never expected that Geoffrey would emerge winner amidst the likes of Emeka and Ugo. Geoffrey Oji has emerged winner of MTN Project Fame Season 7, with his final performance of Asa’s song, ‘Beautiful’. Geoffrey, upon being declared winner, ‘has been handed a cheque of N5m, a brand new car as well as a recording contract.’
Questions are still being asked, how credible was this year’s MTN Project Fame? Was it the fault of Alexandre Forbs who are the ones in charge of the voting accumulation? Did the winner truly deserved it and was there a mix up somewhere? With such a dismay, how loyal will the fans be come next season? Well, as the event ended, Ugo and Emeka, were given N1 million and N5 hundred thousand respectively.
