Police sources told Daily Trust in Kaduna yesterday that a HIV-positive member of a robbery gang recently smashed by detectives from the command confessed to have befriended a number of women and deliberately raped some, to infect them with the virus.
The police said they arrested eight suspected armed robbers in different raids and retrieved over 10 weapons from them. They also retrieved dozens of stolen vehicles.
Some of the robbers including former prisoners revealed places where they sold the stolen vehicles in Nigeria and neighbouring countries.
Police Commissioner Umar Shehu said two of the robbers- Armaya’u Kabir and Ibrahim Kabir, were arrested on Kaduna-Zaria way on May 9, with a Toyota Prado jeep with registration number Kaduna DKA 109 AH, snatched at gun point from the owner along Tafawa Balwa Way in Kaduna.
Two pistols and ammunitions were found in their possession. The commissioner said two other suspected robbers-Umar Yusuf (A.K.A Kukan Kura) and Saidu Maiturare were arrested with a stolen Peugeot 406 car with registration number Kano KMC 492 AJ and a Toyota Rav Jeep. They led the police to their hide out in Zaria where their colleagues engaged the police in a gun battle.
One suspect, Manu Garba, was shot dead while Kabiru Bala and Tijjani Baba were arrested. Two pistols, two Toyota and one Honda cars were recovered from them.
Mr. Shehu said another robbery suspect; Shuaibu Jauro (A.K.A Patai) was arrested in Gada-Biyu with three pistols and military uniforms.
65-year-old Muhammadu Mande (A.K.A Kado) of U/Rimi, Soba, a robbery suspect according to the commissioner, was arrested with six guns.
An AK-47 assault rifle was found at Ruwan Sanyi, Anchau during a police raid.
