The Nigerian film industry would not be complete without the mention of the name of late Herbert Ogunde, the man who has been described by many as the Doyen of Africa’s performing art.
Herbert Ogunde was a thorough traditionalist, who practised his craft professionally on the stage and many thought he was a member of cult because of his in-depth knowledge of occultic chants, which he recites during his performances.
However, in a chat with Daily Independent, one of his children, Dayo Ogunde, has debunked claims that her late father was occultic.
She disclosed that, “What I know is that his father was a traditionalist and he grew up with such tradition and culture.
“It is not as if he belongs to any cult. Yes, you might see some of these spiritualists sometimes come around, but they come just because of the respect they have for his father.”

She further revealed that Herbert Ogunde was a Christian who got born-again on a trip to the United Kingdom.
“He used to be a member of the Grail message and we all attended the church. After some time, he left Grail and we moved to Anglican. He later became a born again when he was in the UK. He is not an Ogboni member,” she added.
