Police in Enugu State said yesterday arrested a man who allegedly supplied arms, especially AK47 rifles, to Fulani herdsmen. The state Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Superintendent of Police (SP) Ebere Amaraizu, said the arrest was made by operatives of the 9th Mile Division in Udi Local Government Area.

He said: “The police today 6th December, 2016 nabbed a suspected notorious gunrunner who allegedly supplied AK 47 rifle to one herdsman, Ibrahim Adamu, earlier arrested by the command.

“The suspect, who gave his name as Samaila Garuba Alhaji aka Bakasi, was earlier implicated by Ibrahim Adamu as the one that sold the AK 47 rifle to him.

But Samaila Garuba Alhaji escaped when he got the information about the arrest of Ibrahim Adamu.” According to Amaraizu, luck, however, ran out on ‘Bakasi’ when intelligence information by the operatives paid off as he was trailed to a motor park situated at 9th Mile in Enugu early hours of yesterday where he was nabbed after failed attempt to escape.

According to the PPRO, the suspect, who is now helping the operatives in their investigations in relation to his nefarious activities, has revealed that he is from Shagari village in Sokoto State. He said police were also trying to check whether the suspect had been supplying other herdsmen with arms before now.
