Two popular firms in Nigeria have been incriminated in a case involving the illegal sale of an intellectual property of a music artiste named Lamboginny.
The singer had taken to his Instagram page to decry the sale of his new song ‘Meje’ on iTunes without his knowledge.
Lamboginny had written, “I just found out my single ‘Meje’ (Number Seven) is selling on iTunes for $1.29 without my knowledge by either Goge Africa, Five Star Music or both of them.”
He went further to say he had already “just finished signing an international digital distribution deal with a Canadian distribution company,” but was shocked to find out that his song was already “selling at $1.29 by Goge Africa and Five Star Music without my knowledge.”
“I am not signed under Goge Africa or Five Star Music, so why would they be selling my song? The leading single from my forthcoming album, and a song handpicked to lead my first digital sale online for that matter,” he fumed.
He threatened that, “My legal team (is) coming at you.”
When Nigeriafilms.com contacted Lamboginny on his post, he told us that he has handed over the issue to his lawyers to pursue.
However, when we contacted Five Star Music, which boasts of KCee and Harrysong, a representative of the label, who spoke with us, denied their alleged involvement in the mess.
“Please kindly contact iTunes company and find out from them who uploaded the music on their site. I am sure they are a reputable company who would have the contact details of their clients and who must have uploaded the music.
“We at Five Star Music do not know who uploaded the music on iTunes and we will like it if he can take legal action because it will expose who the perpetrators are and will they will be brought to book.
“Anybody can upload music on iTunes and call themselves ‘Five Star Music’. So he should go ahead and do whatever he can do to get to the end of the matter,” the Five Star Music rep told us.
Nigeriafilms.com also contacted one of the Executive Producers of Goge Africa, Nneka, and she said, “First of all, Goge Africa does not use iTunes and Goge Africa does not know who the artiste is. We do not deal with iTunes at all. We don’t have any music record label to such act.
“I am hearing it for the first time and when I drop your call, I will go online to check out the artiste. I will listen to what the artiste sounds like.”
When Nneka called back, she told Nigeriafilms.com that, “This is what I think happened, someone could have uploaded the song in the name of Goge Africa to the site of iTunes. The artiste should report the song to the appropriate authority to that they can do the necessary things.
“We will be available and will even cooperate with the necessary authorities during the investigations if the need be. Funny enough, none of us knew in the office until you called. Thank you very much for the information. God bless you.”
