Prominent human rights activist, Mr Femi Falana (SAN) has called for a review of the controversial hiked school fees in Lagos State University (LASU), saying that the increase negates the African charter and the country’s law on right to education.
According to Falana, the state government ought to review the hike in tuition fees paid by the undergraduates on the grounds that majority of them are from poor homes whose parents and guardians “have been economically disabled by the ‘kalokalo’ economic system operated by the ruling class in Nigeria”.
Falana, who made the call in a statement yesterday, also appealed that the Lagos State government should not allow the students to drop out of school due to poverty.
On January 23, 2014 students of LASU embarked on a violent demonstration over the closure of the school’s registration portal by the institution’s management. They claimed that their inability to register on time was because of the expensive fee. The school was then shut due to the violent protest.
Meanwhile, Governor Babatunde Fashola (SAN) of Lagos State has approved the sum of N51million for the repairs of the public property and facilities damaged during the crisis.
