Finally, the American poll has been concluded as America’s Electoral College made Donald Trump‘s victory official, despite a last-ditch campaign by Democrats hoping against the odds its members could revolt and keep the Republican billionaire out of the White House on Monday.
The president-elect easily racked up the 270 electoral votes needed to send him to the White House. Interest in the normally mundane voting process spiked this year as opposition to Trump continues to fester, fueled by Clinton’s success in capturing over 2.6 million more votes than her Republican opponent.
“Today marks a historic electoral landslide victory in our nation’s democracy,” Trump said in a statement. “I thank the American people for their overwhelming vote to elect me as their next President of the United States.”
He added, “this election represents a movement that millions of hard working men and women all across the country stood behind and made possible. With this historic step we can look forward to the bright future ahead. I will work hard to unite our country and be the President of all Americans.”
