The Lagos State Government has made good its threat to prosecute celebrity tax defaulters as it filed complaints against singer, David Adedeji Adeleke better known as Davido.
Punch reports that Davido and Ayo Makun, AY, are leading the line in a hosts of other celebrities that will follow and have a day in court with the state government over alleged tax evasion anytime soon.
It said AY had long been in court with Lagos State for failing to file his tax returns as required by law and his defence was that he paid his tax to Ondo State where he hails from.
The publication said Davido has been charged before a Lagos High Court since July, 2017, and if convicted risk a jail term just as AY. And like the comedian also, the singer has been telling the court he pays his to Osun, his state of origin.
“Remember that Davido said he made N500m from his N30bn concert recently. We must know how much he paid to the LIRS.
“AY too said the same thing. The comedian claimed to be paying his taxes to Ondo State, where he hails from. It seems these celebrities don’t understand that the tax law stipulates that you must pay your tax to your state of residence.
“Anyway, we are already in court. Others will soon appear in court if they don’t obey the state tax law. You can’t be making money in Lagos and refuse to pay tax,” the paper quoted a government source as saying.
