The judgment passed by Justice Jide Falola on June 3 that Muslims students should be allowed to wear hijab to schools because it was part of their fundamental rights has triggered a lot of controversy among the Christian folks as CAN instructed Christian pupils to go to school in their various choir robes and vestments.
The students of the Baptist High School, Iwo, were seen with their various church vestments on Tuesday as they arrived at school by 8:30 and no one chased them back home.
Speaking with the principal of the school, Mr. Omotayo Arowolo, about the new development he said that everything in the school is going on fine.
Olagoke, a catechist and head of Catholic bloc in the Iwo unit of CAN, said that they tried warning the government not to merge Christian missionary school with other school to avoid situation such as this. He furthered that if Muslims were allowed to wear hijab to propagate Islam in schools founded by Christian missionaries, it would also be appropriate for Christian pupils to wear religious garments to schools.
“We are here to defend our religious right, to ensure that nobody chase away our children for deciding to wear choir robes and other church-related clothes to school.
“We told the government before the school merger that we did not want Christian schools to be merged with other schools to avoid this kind of situation. We are determined to make sure that Christianity is not eradicated in the schools established with the sweat of our forefathers in the faith,” he said.
Reacting to the new development, the governor of Osun state , Rauf Aregbesola said any student who wears unauthorized uniform to government owned school will be expelled. Adding that any group dissatisfied with church ruling should seek redress.
