South African sprint runner, Oscar Leonard Carl Pistorius, who has been standing trial over the alleged murder of his girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp, has been sentenced to five years imprisonment.
At the start of the trial, Pistorius denied the premeditated murder of Reeva at his Pretoria home in the early hours of 14 February 2013.
Pistorius pleaded not guilty to the murder and to firearms charges, denying the murder allegations “in the strongest terms.” He told the court that he believed an intruder had broken into his house and was in his bathroom when he fired the gunshots that killed his girlfriend.
In September, Pistorius was found guilty of culpable homicide and cleared of murder.
Judge Masipa, in her ruling, said, “The following is what I consider to be a sentence that is fair and just both to society and to the accused: Count 1 – culpable homicide, the sentence imposed is a maximum imprisonment of five years, imposed in terms of section 276/1I of the Criminal Procedure Act Number 51 of 1977.”
