Following the attack of the Nigerian Army on BRT buses today on Ikorodu road after a BRT bus driver killed a Soldier while crossing the road. The Lagos APC Youth leader Mr. Omotayo Sanyaolu, has strongly condemned the Friday morning carnage perpetuated by men of the Nigerian Army on Ikorodu Road, Lagos, in his words;
“As much as the Youth in Lagos understand the angst of the soldiers whose colleague was alleged to have been knocked down by a BRT driver, we disagree that the incident excuses the mayhem that followed. The impunity with which those buses were burnt and others ruthlessly vandalised cannot be justified. There are procedures to be followed. In such a case as this, the RULE OF LAW requires that the driver be handed over to the civilian authority for prosecution in a civilian court.
“The Nigerian Army must understand that this is not military regime. They must remain in their barracks except a democratically elected authority request their services in quelling unrest beyond the capacity of the civil law enforcement agencies”
However the Army has denied the involvement of its men in the vandalism and burning of some BRT buses this morning at Palmgrove, Ikorodu road.
Speaking with Premium Times, the Nigerian Army spokesperson, Olajide Olaleye, blamed area boys for the attack.
“It’s not true that the soldiers destroyed buses or set any bus on fire. What happened was that a BRT bus knocked down a soldier and killed him. As usual in Lagos, area boys gathered and a few soldiers stopped at the scene as well. The GOC has dispatched military policemen to the scene to help restore law and order,” Mr. Olaleye said.
However eye witness claim military men were the ones attacking and the area boys know nothing about it, it was also disclosed that a female Army officer was also spotted as the incident was going on… what do we believe?
