Many regard him as one of Nigeria’s top musicians. What with his Yahooze song which ruled the airwaves like a tornado. He even made his colleagues green with envy when he performed on stage with former America’s Chief of Defence Staff, Gen. Collin Powell.
But not many will contest the fact that Olu Maintain’s performance at the last edition of Star Mega Jams was simply nothing to write home about.
For a first time performer at a concert that had featured many local and international artistes, one expected Olu to put in his very best and possibly steal the show from the old timers.
Life and Beat learnt that his performance at the Lagos show was ‘dry’ and nearly dampened the highly charged atmosphere of fun. Many even believe that the organisers of the concert may have given Olu an early slot in the Abuja version because of his poor performance in Lagos.
Even at that Olu’s performance still fell below the expectations of many. His stage craftsmanship was next to zero. Rather than entertain the crowd, he preferred to flaunt his belts and blings and tell them that they were worth thousands of pounds. He so much repeated the promise to throw his five thousand pounds belt to the crowd that it became a threat. At the end of the day, he did no such thing.
Removing his shirts, jumping into the crowd and waving his swagger did not move the crowd who were obviously tired of his ranting and waiting for him to sing.
And those who thought the rendition of his hit song, Yahozee, would save the day were wrong. The song could not shake a fly, hence not a few people were happy to miss him when he finally quit the stage.
