On Sunday, April 5, 2015, the Oba of Lagos, Rilwan Akiolu was reported to have threaten the Igbos with death if they fail to vote the governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) on Saturday.

His statement went viral, with many blasting him for ridiculing the highly revered traditional institution because of politics. Some groups have condemned him for such and have asked him to publicly retract the statement and tender an apology to the Igbos.

Joining those who have slammed the monarch are celebrities in Nigeria, some of who described the traditional ruler’s action as shameful.

Nigerian rapper, Illbliss said, “Dear Oba, Truly cannot write the next words so I do not make the same error you made. May God forgive you and bless you with more wisdom.

“The Oba has just tainted his tribe and APC! I feel hurt truly. And we have the guts to face God and pray for unity in Nigeria. Igbos, are you ready to perish in the water?!!!

“Disgraceful speech! Men have become gods, threatening their fellow beings? What we could not do in Aba? May God forgive you.”

Singer, Waje also expressed her opinion about the Oba claiming to be the owner of water-side state, “Owner of Lagos? Mcshew…. Shameful. Democracy in Lagos.”

Alibaba, who is often referred to as the grandfather of comedy in Nigeria said, “Iro (Lies) what Oba of Lagos said, shebi people who could talk, talked during the Presidential election. We listened to all, discounted some and voted.”
