The Ghana Navy, yesterday, Saturday 17, 2015, busted a pirate attack on a Nigerian cargo vessel, MT Mariam and captured all eight bandits.
Although the alleged criminals who tried attacking the merchant vessel were armed to the teeth, but no one, including a nine-member crew aboard MT Mariam, was injured when the Ghana Navy crew aboard GNS BLIKA effected the arrest.
The pirates were apprehended after the owners of the hijacked ship alerted the Ghana Navy about the incident and requested for assistance.
According to Lt Maxwell Asola, the Public Relations Officer of the 1 Garrison, Ghana Armed Forces, all the eight pirates are Nigerians.
However, the arrest took place at about 10:30am after the owner of the MV Mariam vessel, lodged the complaint. The owner said the pirates told him via telephone that they wanted to use the vessel to carry out an attack and banged the phone.
This prompted him to approach the Ghana Navy for assistance and they swung into action that led to the arrest of the eight Nigerian pirates.
MV Mariam is scheduled to dock at the port today, Sunday 18.
