The face-off between the Federal Government and the University governing body, ASUU is in its 4th month and still unresolved.
The past months of unsuccessful negotiations saw ASUU rejecting every offer made by the government to call off the strike including a recent N200 billion offer in october, but rather insistent on their demands, hence the continued occurrence of the strike.
The continued rejection of the Government’s offer by the university governing body at a time got to the government so bad that they vowed not to negotiate with ASUU on the matter any further until recently they did and still were turned down.
The trust and support ASUU had from the students embarking on the strike, has no doubt been withdrawn, with acts of disappointment expressed by the students and many concerned, for their continued refusal of the government’s offer.
The insistence on their 2009 demands has made the students who are tired of sitting at home and many affected by the strike, term ASUU as being self-centered; fighting for their own selfish interest and not that of the students like they claim. A battle which it now looks like they have been left to fight alone.
The President, Dr. Goodluck Ebele Johnathan on monday November 5, called on the leadership of ASUU to present the administration’s last concession for them to call off the prolonged strike and if they fail to, would resolve to his Plan B which would be to compulsorily open the Universities, using the instrumentality of the governing councils and the school managements.
The government seem to be winning the battle as it looks like the strike will be called off anytime soon following the ultimatum given to ASUU, as it was learnt that the leadership of the university governing body left with the excuse of presenting the outcome of the meeting with the president to their members to decide whether or not to call off the strike.
Whatever the decisions are, It’s glaring the students are fed up with the whole ASUU strike and can’t wait for it to be called off.
