The Lagos State Chapter of the Actors Guild of Nigeria (AGN) has called on the Senate to revisit the controversial Child Marriage bill currently pending in the upper house and delete sessions deemed to have been offensive and discriminatory against women.

The AGN made the revelation at a press conference addressed by Chairman of the Lagos State chapter, Mr. Don Pedro Aganbi, and members of the Lagos State Executive Council.

Speaking at the event, Aganbi expressed bitterness that ordinarily the child marriage is an issue that should agitate the mind of the leadership of AGN. “I am saying that the Senate must take another look at that bill. The Actors Guild of Nigeria, Lagos State Chapter, says No to child marriage. We want to align with progressive Nigerians. We want to say that our children cannot be given out in marriage at age six, our children cannot be given out at age 12, its demonic and barbaric.

I read the other day a state credited to the Senate President David Mark exposing the flimflam on which the Senate operates. Mark said senators were blackmailed to pass the provision. He used religion and culture as excuses for the vote. This is ignoble and absurd because Nigeria does not have a state religion, according to Section 10 of the Nigerian Constitution” Aganbi told newsmen

The AGN Lagos Chairman also said that the guild has started sensitizing and mobilizing members for a peaceful protest if the senate does not do the needful.

AGN Lagos State Chapter and progressive Nigerians would contest this matter until it is resolved in our favour. We cannot build a nation on deceit, as has been the case with the Child’s Rights Act (2003) and the Freedom of Information Act (2011). Both laws protect personal liberties the Constitution awards.
