Peter Okoye of P-Square was recently interviewed by Encomium magazine and he spoke extensively about the death of his mother, who passed away on the 12th of July, 2012.

She has been diabetic for years, and when it started many months back, we got good doctors to treat her in Jos. But when we couldn’t get good results, we brought her to Lagos. We took her to St Nicholas Hospital and everybody who went to see her in the hospital cried. She had lost a lot of weight and couldn’t recognise us. She called me Jude. I can never forget that day.

She went through a lot and gradually she got stabilized thereafter she was moved to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and she spent two to three weeks there. So we thought of moving her to South Africa, India or the US for proper check up. We eventually took her to India about four weeks ago and we talked every one hour. The Indian doctors made sure to clean everywhere before the surgery, and the operation was successful. Our sisters who were with her confirmed this to us and we were very happy to hear the good news. She was okay before the eventual death and for a day one of my sisters was unconscious because she couldn’t believe it.

We wanted to travel to India the following day she died (Thursday July 12) but we changed our plans. Her body arrived Lagos on Sunday July 15th. No concrete arrangement yet on the burial. She will be greatly missed, not just because she was our mother, but because she played a vital role in our success story and remains our role model.

You know that she was a prayer warrior, so I don’t need to tell you how she stood by us spiritually. Besides, she was the only one that believed in us when we decided to make a career out of music. She was our source of inspiration and our role model! I can remember that she used to sneak us out at night then to attend shows without the consent of our father who insisted that we must quit music to face our education.

Mrs Josephine Okoye was in her early 60s and was a pastor living in Jos. She is survived by her husband, 7 children (Ifeanyi, Henry, Jude, Lilian, Tony, Peter & Paul and Mary), and 4 grandchildren. Mrs. Okoye was widely known as one of the major pillar and source of inspiration to the singing twin brothers (P-Square). A condolence register was opened in her honour at P-Square’s Omole Phase 1 residence and several friends and colleagues of the multiple award-winning singers have been visiting the house to commiserate with the Okoye family.

May her soul rest in perfect peace, Amen.
