Following Chinua Achebe’s rejection of 50 Cent’s $1m for the use of the title “Things fall Apart” as the American rapper’s latest movie, Nigerian celebs react to the rejection. TADE MAKINDE and SEGUN ADEBAYO report.

One of them must have leaked the deal to the press, which I fault. When Sade Adu gave Patra the permission, without asking a cent, for the use of “Sweetest Taboo”, nobody knew how it happened till the Patra version was released. I think it should have been same here. In any case, Achebe has the right to reject the offer. It would have been interesting if it was $5m

50 made the right move by asking baba’s permission. He even offered $1m. It’s not really about the greens, though important because that’s the amount given to Nobel Peace price winners annually, it would have brought something youthful and different to bear on that title. I learnt the book has been translated in over 40 languages, 50’s interest would have further made that title trans-generational. It would have been more appreciated by African-Americans and been a collaboration of some sort.
