The Akim Oda Magistrate’s Court has slapped a 12-month prison term in hard labour on Abubaka Abdulia, a citizen from Niger for infringing Ghana’s copyright law.
Abdulai pleaded guilty to infringement of copyright and related rights: contrary to Section 42 (1) (G) of the Copyright Act 690 by the court presided over by Mr Albert Owusu Annor.
The court ordered that the convict, a trader, should be extradited to his country after serving his sentence.
Briefing the Ghana News Agency at Akim Oda in the Eastern Region on Wednesday, on the court ruling, Police Chief Inspector Adelaide Appiakorang said the complainant was Mr Godwin Awakeso, an Actor and Producer of Öbonsam Ba” film.
She said at around 1600 hours on June 28, this year, the complainant and his friend Mr Kwesi Appiah, who was a witness in the case detected that Abdulia was offering pirated copies of the film for sale at the cost of GH¢3.00
Inspector Appiakorang said the complainant asked the witness to purchase one of the copies and reported the matter to the police, leading to the arrest and prosecution of Abdulia.
