If compendium is to be made on artistes that helps revolutionalize the Nigerian music industry then the defunct group plantashun boiz will surely make the list. This HipHop group that consist of Chibuzor Orji (Faze) Ahmedu Augustine Obiabo (Black face) and Innocent Ujah Idibia (2face) are force to reckon with in the Nigerian music industry. They came into Limelight in the year 1999 with their first single knock you off which was a monster hit that set the pace for them to ride on . In the year 2000, they finally dropped the most anticipated album then title “body and soul” which was commercially a success. They followed it up with sold out album in 2003 which was also a success after which the group splited in 2004, to pursue their respective solo career.
2face was the first to set the vision in progress after securing a recording contract with one of the biggest record company in West Africa “KENNIS MUSIC” under which he released his debut album “Face 2 face” which went platinum.
Blackface followed up by dropping a single title “Hard life” which rocks the Airwaves but when the complete album “Ghetto child” Finally drops, is not as massive as every one expected it to be.
Then came the thought underdog of the group faze with faze alone album which also gather some momentum but not as huge as is counter part 2face’s debut.
It’s a decade down the line now, 2face has scores platinum with the 3 albums he has released so far! Faze 2 faze, Grass to Grace and unstoppable international version along side numerous local and international awards like mtv Europe, world music award, mobo, kora etc to show for it, with endorsement deals.
Faze on his own part has sold 6million copies in his three consecutive albums, Faze alone, independent and originality. He has also won several local awards including the best male vocalist (Hip Hop world Awards 2006), a collab with wyclef on the song “proud to be African” and also stage performances with naughty by Nature, Genuwine and Akon
But on the part of Black face, ever since the group has separated his being striving so hard to get it right. From the released of his debut Ghetto Child to the “me, musiq and I” album, is yet to score platinum and one start to wonder what is going on with this prolific songwriter that write 75percent of plantashun boiz songs when they were still together.
Let me draw your attention back to the diss song Eedris Abdulkereem did for the plantashun boiz in the year 2000 title “Wacka wike mcs” in which he said on the song that 2face is the plantashun while Faze and Blackface are the boyz. A decade down the line, should we accept Eedris Abdukareem assertion? Or let’s the sleeping dogs lies.
