No doubt, Nigerian music is enjoying a re-emergence in the global music scene. Though the artistes have done their part in ensuring this, producers sometimes do not get their due credit. This article celebrates nine producers who in my opinion deserve a little bit more recognition for their work.

GospelOnDeBeatz

What else can one expect from someone who trained under the amazing Tee Y-Mix? Gospel Obi aka GospelOnDeBeatz holds diplomas in Electronic Music Production and Audio Engineering. Working with most Nigerian A list acts, He has produced hit singles like: Davido’s All of You, Tekno’s Holiday, Yemi Alade’s Taking Over Me ft. Phyno, Iyanya’s Jombolo, Burna Boy’s Celebrate, Praiz’s Heartbeat, If I fall, and Sisi ft. Wizkid. Gospel also created the signature montage sounds for both News Hour and Kakaki on Africa Independent Television (A.I.T).

E-Kelly

The man behind Vector’s Shiga, Tekno’s Dance, Boybreed’s Slowly, Dj Spinall ft. M.I Abaga Oluwa, YCEE’s Condo, Naeto C’s Helele, Waje’s Coco Baby, Lynxx’s Leave Story, Omawumi’s Megbele is one super talented dude. His steady rise as a producer is as a result of hard work, resilience and deep knowledge of music.

Spellz

“I remember the first time I heard Banky W’s Good Good Loving. I was so enthralled by the instrumentals that I made a mental note to myself to find out who the producer was. I’ve since found out that Benjamin Obadje aka Spellz was behind the song.” The official producer for T Billz’s 323 Entertainment continually outdoes himself in every song he produces. He is responsible for Dammy Krane’s Amin, Burna Boy’s Don Gorgon, Skales’s Always ft. Davido, DJ Spinall’s Gba be, Trafic’s Quality, Chuddy K’s Gaga Crazy and Tiwa Savage’s Folarin.

Wole Oni

Most might not recognise the name Wole Oni, but think about the songs Igwe by Midnight Crew, Olo mi, by Tosin Martins, Ijoba Orun by Lara George, and Onyeka Onwenu’s Peace Song, then you would begin to appreciate Mr Oni’s musical genius. So far, he has produced for the likes of Yvonne Chaka Chaka, Dele Bamigboye, Kefee, Segun Obe, Ara, Pastor Aity Inyang, Tim Godfrey and Xtreme Crew, Kenny Kore and Silver Saddih. He recently produced three massive songs for peace in Nigeria. The first was for the Neighbour 2 Neighbour Network, then The Kefee Foundation and the Nigerian Centenary theme song. He has also produced commercials for top brands like MTN, Stanbic IBTC, CFC (Communicating for Change), Access Bank , Milo, Promasidor, GTB, and Power Horse.

DJ Coublon

There is something catchy about this man’s name that draws interest in his production. His work on Kiss Daniel’s songs Woju and Laye launched him into prominence. His other credits include Iyanya’s Le kwa Ukwu and Applaudise; Emma Nyra’s For My Matter, and Asterix’s Okpeke.

Mosa

Born Mosadoluwa Adegboye (Mosa for short), this Kwara state native singlehandedly produced T.Y Bello’s critically acclaimed debut album Greenland back in 2008 and he has not looked back since then. The highly skilled producer has even released his own songs Perfect and I’ll just say it, I love you. He was also part of the Nigerian musical delegation who performed Michael Jackson’s We Are The World song against Xenophobia.

Mikkyme

Mikkyme’s talent as a producer is evident in most of Brymo’s songs. I mean, this dude produced 3 out of Brymo’s 4 albums almost singlehandedly. Abeg, if anyone knows him, tell him it will be nice to hear more of his work.

Oscar

Oscar Herman Ackah’s attention to detail in in songs he has produced is what endears him to me. If you doubt me, listen to his work on Simi’s songs E no go funny, Tiff, and Jamb Question. If you need more convincing of his production skills, bear in mind that he produced the following songs: Niyola’s Last Bus Stop, PSquare’s Collabo, Chop my money, and its remix.

Young John

Unarguably one of Nigeria’s fastest rising producers, Young John “the wicked producer” a native of Akwa Ibom is proving himself to be a growing brand amongst music producers in this country. He produced Olamide’s Story for the Gods, Bobo, Ladi ft. Phyno, Charas’s I See, Lil Kesh’s Gbese, and Jaywon’s Tanawole and a host of others.
