The National Broadcasting Commission (NBC), in a letter, has directed MDs and CEOS of all broadcasting stations to notify the Commission in writing, at least 48 hours, before transmitting a live program.
In the letter signed by Chris Okoyomoh, on behalf of the management, the NBC warned that it would no longer tolerate the repeated abuse currently observed with this genre of program, particularly, inciting, provocative and highly divisive comments frequently served to the public, as live political broadcasts.
According to some station executives who spoke with Sahara Reporters, this was coming on the heels of a sponsored live broadcast by Governor Rotimi Amaechi of Rivers state on May 29th, featuring several opposition political commentators blasting President Goodluck Jonathan for condoning corruption, which allegedly forced the Presidency to clampdown on live broadcast programmes.
As Nigeria approaches the 2015 election, the NBC is putting all hands on deck to avert any form of political unrest that could arouse from any form of live television broadcast and as such, warned that all political broadcasts must conform to the provision of the Code.
