MI
In 2004, Eedris Abdukareem surprised the world and gained international attention when he engaged US rapper 50 Cent while on a plane. This happened when 50 Cent was in Nigeria for a show. This brought about revolution in the music industry as local artistes thereafter started getting good pay from shows promoters as performance fee. In August 2012, another US rapper, Rick Ross was in Nigeria for a show. While in Nigeria, Rick Ross shot a music video for his controversial 'Hold Me Back' song. The Nigerian version of music video has, after its release, been criticised for the bad portrayal of Nigeria as a slum country. Recall that his first version of the same music video was banned on BET stations for some controversial issues. Now, Nigerian rapper, Jude Abaga otherwise known as MI has vent his anger on Rozay as Rick Ross is fondly called over the way he painted the most populous black nation in the world as ghetto. MI posted on his website, "does it make you angry? Does it rile you to see your country portrayed as poor and suffering and full of struggle?
"It burns you, does it not? To have some foreigner- who knows nothing of your history and pain, of the stories that flow within your blood- to have this foreigner come in and tell your story?
"Is it not the height of disrespect and insensitivity? Does it not chafe against the thick skin you have grown to cover your other wounds? Does it not make you angry?
"We should wax sanctimonious about national pride being slighted. We should vent our displeasure online. We should occupy something. Because God forbid the truth ever be told about what things really are.
"God forbid a stranger remind us about those things we choose to ignore everyday. God forbid we ever face the truth about ourselves. God forbid we do not go on the internet and rail about how our country is being cast in bad light.
"God forbid we do not talk about how there is a small minority which lives better than portrayed. God forbid we do not ignore truth one more time. God forbid we don’t."For those who have watch the controversial music video, was Rick Ross portraying a wrong Nigeria?

THE BOSS | 9/21/2012 7:07:26 AM |
Rick Ross's portrayal of Nigeria is disrespectful, deceitful and wrong. Every Nigerian is not starving, begging, stealing & so on. Yes, there are millions of Nigerians suffering but there are also millions of Nigerians laughing & enjoying life. If Nigerian gov't had any atom of sense, backbone & respect for their country, they'll ban Rick Ross's music video "Hold Me Back" instead of banning the music of Nigerian artistes who sing about the corruption & strife in Nigeria. Someone should ask Mr. Ross, when he came to Nigeria, did he stay in a 5 star hotel or in the slum aka ghetto? Did he drink dirty water? Beg? Starve? Didn't he see all the gorgeous homes surrounding the hotel where he stayed? He wants to be high-fived by his peers & supporters... that's why he tweeted pix of the slums & pix him buying some less privileged individuals groceries. Anyways, this is a big lesson to Nigerians to stop worshiping foreign stars while disrespecting their own or worshiping anyone & anything that isn't Nigerian. This should be a wake up call that it's time for Nigeria to live up to her name (giant of Africa)! It's time for Nigerians to start putting out positive images of themselves & their country because no one else will do it for them. Have a pleasant day folks. RBX | 9/21/2012 9:02:21 AM |
The Boss my fine ally, doing what u do best making sense as usual. God bless your mother and you've said it all. This Ross character is the worst kind of villain basically ate the hand that fed him. I'm not suggesting the Nigerian condition should be swept under the carpet but this guy is a pure confusionist. Can u imagine how many mis-guided Nigerians have already been subliminally infected by his Biafra reference. The perceived emancipation message of this video has literally been mentally invented by Nigerians who are too meek and also desperate to bell a cat. Rick Ross the Human rights activist...does that even sound right? chibuzo | 9/21/2012 11:57:06 AM |

suffering and smiling, what rick ross said in his message are things a lot of both foreign and local people have said about this country NIGERIA .its not today some people think some nigerians are still living in trees,u know who u are and if one out of a million of us keeping doing this country proud and the bad is checked it would get to a point that it would not matter what is being said cause the GOOD will start outweighing the bad.
RBX | 9/21/2012 10:19:27 AM |
did u listen to the lyrics of the song or a friend told you about it? what message exactly? do mean d nigga dis nigga dat? You're overthinking it while Rick Ross smiles to the bank. Rememeber Ross himself said he went from Hungry to greedy...Dollars come first. He's just figured out a new way to get more money and nothing else matters. Plus everyone that needs to know anything about Nigeria already knows all, there is an overwhelming amount of material in documentaries, daily news and movies to literally put all Nigerians in the stone age...Just trust me, white folks do concise research and this negative message Rick Ross is sending out will only butress contempt for Africans in people who were normally neutral. Not a muscle will be moved in support, this chaos over here feeds foreigners and expats billions overseas because the wholesale theft of African natural resources must be sustained by any means necessary. Let's not over analyse but do you get it yet? Conscience is for the poor and Godly, find yourself a real hero.
okene gurl | 9/28/2012 3:46:54 AM |
hahahahahaha. Mr. Rick Ross is wrong to have washed our dirty linen in public but insults, and all sort of abusive view and replies will not help matter. If dis really offends de govt, let dem swing in to action and correct what he potrayed of our dear country. Lol. E dey pain?

M.I u're only bitter that the 'revelation' didn't come from you. I'm disappointed that u, who I believe understands how far conscious songs can go change things no matter how little, could come out to oppose Rozay for digging out what all of u have decided to hide because u all have in one way or the other benefited from government and sold ur conscience and those of u who haven't eaten, u try not to step on toes so u could also be favoured. All u artistes of nowadays do is talk about sex, women and good life and you forget we have a problem to tackle in this country. You're talking about occupying........why don't u use ur songs and videos to occupy the hearts of our leaders until they begin to work? Wake up people, speak the truth and if our leaders care so much about the country's image, then they should work even harder to make things better. How much longer do we have to keep covering up our inadequacies? How much longer??????
Kalon Da Rapper | 9/24/2012 3:20:32 AM |
I agree with u potato-head....its sarcasm alrite. BUT doesnt the 4th paragraph convey MI's thoughts as his main reason for this poetic piece???? Truth be told....MI would have won many more hearts and left lots of pple in a state of dilemma as to wat he meant. Now, if he chose to leave out the 4th paragraph...it wud hav been a BRILLIANT PIECE OF POETRY...for freethinkers like me! Fortunately for me....he didnt!!! hahahahahahahaaaaa!

Why are Nigerians deceiving themselves.Any reasonable person who lives in western countries will call Nigeria a slum.Where should we start from,Roads, health, energy, infrastructure etc.We will be s****d to blame Ross.Do u want Him to pretend just like the way poor Nigerian do (suffering and smiling)?Let MI to keep his dirty mouth shut,Are they not the so called artists who only want to be popular by being friends to American artists( Ass lickers). Please Nigerians, sort out your problems and stop blaming Ross Riss for reminding u that ur problems are unspeakable.

Taiwo idowu NY | 9/21/2012 4:57:38 PMThis man is saying it the way most Nigeria,Africa and the world sees it.Why do nigerians have a hard time hearing the truth?.Rick is not the first American that talk about Nigeria.Remember Chesnut?Iam just suprise that Eedris this same guy that was talking about how Jagajaga nigeria is and almost have a blowout with OBJ.I wrote in that article that he was 100% right about his song. Now this gheto rapper call abaga is screaming mad about Rick saying the truth about Nigeria. How can Abaga follow Eedris footstep?.Eedris sang a song that cut straight into OBJ heart and he is still fuming about it.With all these song, what has Nigeria government done to improve her Citizen life?.Nothing but getting worse. This is not the first wake up call for Nigerian leaders. They should get off their asses and do the right thing for the masses.A nigerian, white, foreigner, yellow, black all saying the same thing. Is this a coincident?.Are nigerians getting mad because an African American say it loud and clear?.Guess what?this is your country problems. The citizens should tell their goverment to do better. What does he know about 9ja. When has he become a human right activist. You and those who are in support of this his action are disgusting... Grow up and be informed 'cause the way he portrayed this country is beyond your myopic point of view... It would affect you yourself cause of the way you'll be treated -esp when you travel oversea- by as many foreigners who had seen this ugly portray of 9ja via the video and probably others...
