For Antar Laniyan, a versatile actor and consummate director, the sizzling romance with acting started professionally 32 years ago. But an average actor in the English home movie sector earns much more than his counterpart in the Yoruba movie industry. The reasons have been well outlined by Antar Laniyan who has become a director of sort. In a chat with a media personality recently where it was required of him to decide who earns big bucks out of Genevieve Nnaji and Mercy Aigbe in the Yoruba genre where he reign supreme.

This is what he said ``Is Genevieve earning her money from acting alone? Let me tell you the life of an average Igbo actor. If you are a successful Igbo actor, your rich Ibo brother will ask you about the brand of car you are driving. If you tell him the kind of car you have, the rich Ibo man will say, 'come, I have a jeep, so come and take it, if you like it. And he can even give you money. But how many people can do that in our own set up (Yoruba)? The Ibo man will help his brother, not necessarily because of what he wants to gain, but just to lift him. I doff my hat for Ibo people and I wish we could be doing that in our own sector too.``

With this, it still wonders people, Antar fans why he has not dumped the Yoruba genre that he’s and join the English movie where he started from but he said, the grasses at the other side of the sea are always greener. ``Yes, I started there, but there is some marginalization, which we have been fighting all the while. We keep saying that an actor is an actor, irrespective of his or her tribe or medium of expression. I want all the artistes to stay under one umbrella. Even though there will be associations, guilds and all that, there will still be an umbrella with a unique name that we will belong to,`` was her word.

Yes nollywood is about the ibos, because they help their brothers and sisters, the yorubas are so sneaky and most of them arent straight, that is why most of them didnt make it in the English section, the ibos,co oerate and help themselves,The producers also communicate with the ibos more, that is what made Genny a star..TCHIDI is from MBAISE and helped Genny

If Tchidi helped Genny, Saidi Balogun should help Mercy afterall, Its all about helping our people. Akwa Ibom (Ibibio) has started it with Emem Isong. Come to think of it the Igbos has even helped every1 bcos talent speaks. Omotola, RMD, Olu Jacobs, Joke Silva and a host of others are not even Igbos but they helped them. Even the Ghananians.

Me think Igbos are stingy but if you say they are generous, no problem. But why wont the english actors earn better than Yoruba? Nw tell me how many non Yoruba speaking persons watches those local Yoruba movies! As for Genny n Mercy, they are incomparable. Genny has a lot of fans, she acts well n everybody watches her but same cant be said on Mercy. Please go to the english genre atleast more money n popularity will come ya way.

Yes oo,people are more popular and classy in the English Sector, and i also think the igbo Producers help their people alot, tribalism is everwhere, see how Super Story,s Man uses the Yorubas more in his programme, and the English sectore more of the Igbo,s ..Calabar started their own with EMem Isong, and thats still English, its all about helping your people

There's no comparism between Genny and mercy aigbe fees! Get that clear. Genny has come a long way, she's a household name to both those who watch english and yoruba movies. Unlike mercy who is tryin to step up her game.

dbanj got on everyone nerve with d way he handled his separtion with don jazzy.all his silly intervoews about buying cars which was infact all lies,as he was, in his usual character runing erand for the house and claiming glory where there was non.

D only way to know that the igbos helps one another in the their number where ever they reside.once one starts making it he invites another.

Forget their fight politically.they are very co'operative.check them in oil marketing business.

The yorubas startee'the home video stuff but they came in and benched them with living in bondage

I would not totally agree with Antar on this. I am a Yoruba man, I will not give my money or support some of these Yoruba actors and actresses. Lately, if you watch their movies is all about praising the "Oshodi touts" and some other "Lagos touts". They need to step up their games, Kunle Afolanyan doesn't act in English movies, yet he makes a lot of money. To all my Yoruba actors and actresses, step up your productions-picture-wise, marketing-wise, and all other-wise.

Every ethnic group works very hard, not only Igbos. I have Yoruba friends who work their butts off and are proud of it. Stop stereotyping.

Do u know where some of these people gets their money from, no u don't, so dont compare d good people with the bad apple from both ethnic group bc i know some 're ritualist, armed robbers, fraudsters, etc they help bc maybe God Almighty can forgive them their sins through that way but no sinners will never go unpunished. God bless d patriotic 9geria from east, west, south nd north bc i know will still good apples from both part. Mr laniyan e je ki nkan te ba ni ko te yin lo run ke ma ba pada nu e.

It has nothing to do wit tribs but personality a stingy man is a stingy man wither igbo or yuroba everything depend on up bringing and personality some people are givers while some are not. Though Igbos are hard working that i agreed.

Good summary, but note that "Aso Ebi" is a Yoruba pshare that means "cloth of the family" literally, but means the clothes worn by family members. The girls that come out with the bride are usually her friends/young female relatives and are also dressed similarly, but this is a very different culture than the Yoruba Aso Ebi.

forget dat thing
kwankwaso | 8/28/2012 2:20:22 PM
Forget this unreasonable talk that Igbo brothers help their actresses or whatever. Some of these actors and actresses we are talking about come from poor homes.
