I have experienced loss myself and can tell you that it hurts to lose a mother! Sometimes I find it difficult to listen to people telling me about their mothers! At times I blame my mama for dying! Oh...how I cried all day when our first child was born (arrival of our second child didn't make it easier either). I long to hear my mama question my parenting skills like why I spank my children (and remind me of how I was pampered when I was at their ages) but I will never hear her voice again! Mothers' Day especially is too painful knowing I would never buy a card for her or present her with a gift! Or how numbing it is to go to church, and see all mothers getting their roses (if I am in the United States on Mothers' Day) from the front, and know she is not there and there will never be a rose for her!! Or if I am in Nigeria (on Mothers' Day), and see all the mothers wearing Mary Sumner! One may not understand until one experiences it first hand.
If Tonto lost her mother when she was just three years old, that explains her behavior! Don't get me wrong...I am not saying that those who lost their mothers very early in their lives are irresponsible. No, what I am saying is that they live differently in this world - they are no more anchored by the comforting knowledge of that one person who has known them before they even knew themselves! People who are securely attached to their mothers are more self-reliant and have a better sense of self. In Tonto's case, the effect is too deep and damaging!!
People react differently. My friend who lost her mother when she was 12 months old once said to me," I feel like losing my mom has helped me connect with people". I didn't understand how though, still don't! In Tonto's case, I would say- The loss! The pain! The void! The behavior! There maybe some sort of appreciation towards her step mother, but she will always need/miss her biological mother! And, with this sense of loss and intense pain, I sincerely hope and pray she finds a loving partner who would help her deal with it.
