That way whatever size the screen is, your website will be floating in the middle. 1024 is still valid. Laptops are something like 1440 990.I wouldn't consider the ipad to be that big a deal, unless you are designing some sort of ipad users website. It occupies and will continue to occupy a very tiny share of web traffic.Most people will be using laptops and desktops and some unexciting resolution no more than an average of 1280 1024 . that's a reasonable max in fact.
