All is not well at newly opened Ikeja City Mall where super store, Shoprite is housed. This is happening as a result of agitation for the abolition of the newly introduced hourly rate payment for car parked at the city mall. This move by the management of the store has reportedly reduced the level of patronage by visitors with cars. We learnt that talks have been going on before now between South African owners of Shoprite and those who rented shops in the mall over the parking space payment. To show their grievances, shop owners at the mall have reportedly shot down. This, we learnt will go on until the decision is reversed. The introduction of hourly charges for parking spaces at the newly opened Mall is indeed a bad marketing strategy that will not give adequate and encouraging patronage to the Mall, trust MEE. Why? somebody may ask MEE. The reasons being that Nigerian society is not used to this kind of revenue generating policy. Those who introduced the idea should note that Nigerian buyers are not like the Americans who, and where everybody is used to the idea of paying for every service renders to you. Even people pay for the breathing air in the US! Even if such payment is going to be implemented, trust MEE, it shouldn't be now that the Mall is just being freshly opened to the public. Customers should be allowed to know very well, fall in love with and display greatest interest in the patronage of the various stores in the Mall so much so that people will have no choice but to get ready and support the payment. And even when the time ripes enough to do that, the charges MUST be reasonable and affordable for every Tom, Dick and Harry so that patronage will not be affected and thus reduce sales. This is unfair to those that patronise the Mall. Do they expect the customers to trek all the way from wherever they are coming from or pack all their family members inside those buses that are not road worthy all in the name of going to the place. The operators of the Mall should understand that the place is like a Tourist centre where people relax after a hectic working week and the children likes to catch their fun, it goes beyond shopping, going to shoprite alone where you spend hours on queue to buy bread and more hours to pay is enough to spend 3hours. I just visted the mall and was shocked at the charges.. I havent seen any malls were people pay to park.. But I understand the thinking of the operators.. They are no father Christmas. They are in there for a profit... Despite the charges there were such long queues to park... i have never seen such.. Blame it on the lateness of Nigeria in joining the modern mall craze and lack of safe public parking anywhere near the place. Please stop blaming the operators as they are not running a charity..
