Odunlade Adekola

That Odunlade Adekola, the winner of the Yoruba Movie Academy Awards, has a fair diction of English language should not be a yardstick to measure his talent or performance in the industry.

The handsome dude who has stated making money in Nollywood with series of endorsement has come out to tell his critics that he is not eager to accept a role in any Nollywood movie shot in English.

“Contrary to what you think, I have appeared in two English language movies that have not been released. Soon, I will proceed on a location for yet another English language film.

That I don’t act frequently in English film shouldn’t be an issue at all. Do the Amita Bachans and the Kapoors of India and the Yang Yin or Chang Chong from China try too hard to speak English? Why should my own case or those of us proudly projecting our indigenous language be different?

Those popular soap operas that our ladies nowadays love to watch so much on TV that are from South America were not originally voiced in English language but Spanish”

The actor is not obliged to apologise to anyone for his preference for Yoruba films. “It’s a life long dream of mine to become a world-class actor with bias for expressing myself in my mother tongue, which is Yoruba.

I really don’t see how that has negatively affected some people. Really, I’m not crazy about the English roles because I don’t believe in trying too hard to speak the language that cannot bring out the best in me as a core and proud Yoruba man.

They are complaining that I love to act in Yoruba films a lot, but what the complainants don’t realise is, I’m creating job opportunities for graduates of English language to subtitle my films in English,” he says.

It is better he remains were he can do better dan wanting to fake around in English genre of nollywwod thereby disgracing himself at last. I dnt watch yoruba movies per say, but i wish we igbos can emulate their pretty examples by coming out real with our language especially in movies. Pls o Adekola, dnt evn blink over this cheap talk, do ur ting anyhow u want evn though am not ur fan.

Adekola, trust MEE a great deal, your speech is just an escuse for your inhability, and the disability in you to speak and probably write simple and common English Language, period. trust MEE, this is nothing but " a mere consolatory talk", as well as filmsy escuses to defend your inhability to speak simple good English Language fluently. So sorry for you.

Why you pple are talking like this, this call English is our borrowred language. For the fact that, one is not an English Actor does not means he /she is local or does not know how to speak English language fluently.Put an end to this..... and find something reasonable to do
I still love you
Biola | 7/10/2012 7:47:54 AM
To remain relevant in the industry and be internationally recognised you have to be versatile in the universal language called English or you are going to limit yourself to the yoruba speaking genre alone. So please dear i do love you and it's not too late to learn English. There is no doubt about the fact that you are a natural actor and the best one in the yoruba industry for that matter. Please go see the new Amitabh Bachan's movie shot in Hollywood with the likes of Leonardo Dicaprio. He Could have never dreamt of such role if he was not fluent in the English language. Please dear don't limit your talent 'cause the sky is the limit for you. Love you. Smootches.....

WHY | 7/10/2012 7:54:50 PM |
I kind of disagree with you on the basis that vasatility is based on English language.Guess what . . . .VERY WRONG..Bollywood guys ply their trade in whatever their language is called...as long as they are good, they are well known all over the world.Odunlade can speak english, only his diction or accent is heaavy and i prefer him to retain his accent because people like him are more respected in the western world.Nigerians especially the once that speak good english can not flunt anything in front of the westerners because,u can never speak like them, and dont be suprised when people like Odunlade are being given roles in Hollywood. What we see as inability is what they are looking for,if they needed a fluent americanised or british ascent, they will not think of Africans. When you watch hollywood roles that has a role of African ascent they dont look for grammaic white man ascent actors.More so, if there is a good director, there is no reason for Odunlade not to act english roles, the director will showcase him well and you will not even believe it was Odunlade when he starts delivering his speech. In short,Nigerians are shalow minded short sighted, when indians speak english or filipinos threy tell you they prefer to keep their ascent because that is what make you what u arew but 9ja has low self esteem and lack confidence in what they are(not hausas.they keep their culture, ascent, and everything)and Igbos are trying too but i think Yorubas are the only ones that has these problem the most. When i come home to 9ja all children are speaking english, they see Yoruba language as local but if you have ears please listen to me.You can never speak english like the owners. They envy you because you have another language. Please visit Canada and appreciate the beauty of your language or ascent.Thank you Odunlade people like you are preserving our Yoruba language
Why
Nneoma | 7/11/2012 2:21:43 AM |
I strongly agree with u, Nigerians have one problem wich is inferiority complex, this is why they can never be real in anything they do. If only we can appreciate who we are & tank God 4 our natural heritage. No matter how hard we try, we can never be oyibo!
@WHY
MEE | 7/11/2012 11:47:05 AM |
In as much as MEE agrees with all your points, and as relevant as they are, the fact still remains that you need to learn, know and understand a language first before your ascent, diction, pronounciation, grammer, dialet and what have you could be considered. MEE thinks what Biola was advising Odunlade in her peice is the need for him to go and learn, know and understand all the nooks and cons of English Language, and how to write it, so as to boost his career to the highest level. And this is a bittered truth that cannot be ignored. Biola calls the English Language a "universal Language" and this is true. Anywhere you visit in the world today, the common language for any transation is English, trust MEE. So Odun and the rest like him needs to learn, know and understand English Language in other for him to excel in his career, irrespective of his ascent or pronounciation or dialet towards the Language. Everybody needs it, trust MEE.
MEE
WHY | 7/11/2012 12:21:01 PM |
It is so good we are on the same page and we both agree on common grounds. If you watch Oduns Movies and some of his interviews very well,it sis not that he can not speak english, his major challenge is ascent, pronounciation and and lack of fluency, which to me is OK.I once watch one of his movies when he was trying to say Season but pronounced it as sisin. Those are basically his flaws not that he cannot speak english at all.
ENGLISH & NIGERIANS
MADAM | 7/12/2012 12:20:19 AM |
It is only Nigerians that would want to cut their tongue or twist it all around in a bid to have another man's accent. Even all of us grammarians here i can still pick one or two errors from our write-ups including mine, so what are we saying here ?
Please tell the Indian, Chinese or the Carribean man to have the perfect English man's accent, dictions etc.
To hell and to blazes with this english thing and who told you guys that english is the official language of the world ? What about French ?
Most countries of the world are multilingual and who told you guys Odunlade needs an interpreter to find his way around town and must he do movie in english before he can be tagged a success ?
Amitabh of the popular Bollywood indusrty how many english movie did he do before he became known world wide ? I leave these questions for my opponents to answer and thank you panel of judges.

I see nothing wrong with acting in one's language. All those soap operas were never shot in English. Second chance, untamed beauties, mari mar, happy endless, etc were never shot in english language. Just that we Nigerian does'nt like watching films shot in our languages. Odunlade, acting in your mother tongue can never be a crime but let it not be that you cant speak english. Infact I would love to see you in a nollywood movie shot in english to shame critics. God bless U.

Chyke | 7/10/2012 9:03:26 AM
Better remain there than to fake and force your accents in the english genre like some of them. I.e Monalisa Chinda who tries to speak some s****d english that brings tears to my eyes, Mercy J whose accent is horrible, Ini Edo who speaks American and Nigerian accents at the same time, Oge Okoye and Tonto that are best known as madam fake accents. Emeka Ike and Mike Ezurounye with their poor grammer wahala. Chika Ike with her terribly fake accent.

You talk lie this time! Everybody in this world should know how to speak simple engerlish! Not everybody sabi Yoruba. Engerlish is an ESSENTIAL language round the world!
Lalaland
WHY | 7/11/2012 2:31:20 PM |
Nope not all the part of the world, there are some countries that if you speak English to them you are on your own,Even all official documents are all in their local Languages and of course if you are out of this area(country) to move to another country where English is the language they speak then try to communicate in their language and this time it is all about use of english, being able to pass message across. Canada has 2 official languages French and English you must be fluent in minimum of one or at least speak the two(biolinguist). If you go to areas in Quebec you had better forget English and hold on firmly to your French in order to survive and be reckon with.
Why
Lalaland | 7/12/2012 1:45:25 AM |
I get what you are saying. But in nigeria ENGLISH IS A MUST! You have to be able to speak your language AND english. Me everywhere I have travelled in this world, they have a language AND english.
Lalaland
WHY | 7/26/2012 11:51:58 AM |
Good we understand each other but Odunlade can speak the required use of English, only that it is not to the general expectation of people, which does not count. As long as he can communicate, answer questions and can respond to issues...i am cool with it and i think that is what matters.
does not know?
Jane | 9/2/2012 3:40:14 PM |
@True talk. Shame on you! Just look at the very bad grammar you have written here!
you have written "those that does not know,,"
"Those" ( plural) and "does" ( singular) can never be used together!
Even a child in primary 3 should know this!
Did you even finish primary school? If yes why disgracing yourself by writing very bad English like this? I am sure when you speak English people run for cover from your heavy mortar shelling of r*****h English!
Your are one of those people who CANNOT speak and write even simple English and you deceive yourself by hiding behind the cliche of " English is not our language!"
Shame on you!

Can't you see that this man can't speak or probably write a correct and simple english?.He is suppose to be a spokesman for a big company, not only in Nigeria, but to Africa as a whole.Another thing is he is now realizing that yoruba only speaking movies will not generate enough revenue for him. This employing some graduates is Frakanakabull. The man knows his weakness and want more money,he has no choice but to learn how to write and speak simple english. He is a good thinking business man.Believe me,if you can't speak or write simple English, you got a serious problem not only in Nigeria, but all over the world.Trust me.

Nigerian speaks bad english not Odun alone. Our problem starts from the foundation. We pronunce alphabets in our tribal accent so how can we enuciate a word correctly? It only depends how curious you are to correct the flaw.I never know i speak r*****h until i graduated from University. As a theatre arts student i enroll for master class for SCREEN ACTING at ROYAL ARTS ACADEMY Emem Isong film school. Our first Eloqution class we all f**k up with our strong tribal accents before D.J dictionary was recommended for all students. As for Odun no one is perfect,i am a well trained and skilled aspiring actor and writer, but i have to travel to Abeokuta sometimes to see yoruba filmmaking themes and methods to have more clues apart from stanislavkhi methods.Odun is man i know and he knows me well,so he can still speak english eloquently and partray a character in English film.It is not the critics who count.

Indeed. In Ottawa(for example), I've nocetid similar signage, but written up in at least eight other languages on a given poster. Languages, I assume, that are those most likely to be spoken/written by those needing the English lessons they're looking for.

transcripts are a big disgrace

Odun , make sure you employ the "correct" English graduates who can speak and write simple correct English , properly.. Not the incompetent types who have been writing the shameful , very bad , r*****h English transcripts we see in almost all Yoruba films. They are a disgrace to Yoruba Nollywood. Even primary school children can write better English.
Bad and disgraceful English transcripts in Yoruba films are spoiling the good film efforts.
Nigeria is blessed with millions of very educated citizens who went to very good schools and they are from educated families where they have been encouraged to speak and write English , properly.
It is a big disgrace to speak English like, "we have hentered awa ouse ! " ( we have entered our house!) ! !
LMAO ! r*****h!
Yes , we should be proud of our native tongue, but we should also be able to speak and write simile English correctly because English is Nigeria's official language and it is the world's lingua franca.
If you borrowed something and keep using it for over 50 years and the owner never asked you to return it , then that thing is no longer borrowed.
English is no longer a borrowed language in Nigeria. It is now a Nigerian language.
